Reclaimed Aggregates Inc. (RAI) has, for many years been constructing Cold Central
Plant Recycling (CCPR) projects for various public and private pavement owners.
CCPR is a specialized and urban-friendly technology that can be used anywhere as
an alternative to conventional paving methods in parking lots, streets, alley ways,
frontage roads, cul-de-sacs, and storage yards.
In April 2009, Tony Barker, senior estimator with American Asphalt & Concrete
located in Spring Valley, California, contacted RAI regarding preparing a "value
engineering" proposal for an up coming project. RAI proposed using a 100% recycled
Renew™ asphalt as opposed to using conventional hot mix asphalt repaving method
originally specified for the project.
The project, a truck logistics center for the staging of trailers and containers
is located on Balboa Ave. in Kearny Mesa, a suburb of San Diego. The existing 65,000
SF parking area was unpaved; consequently, the property owner was experiencing problems
with dust control in the dry months and mud and tracking issues during the winter.
American Asphalt & Concrete's Tony Barker first recommended grading and compacting
existing soils in preparation for installation of a 3.5 inch asphalt overlay.
But the owner balked - too expensive. "Is there an alternative?" Thinking outside
the box Tony was able to prepare a proposal using recycled asphalt that met the
customer's budget.
According to Robert Erautt of Reclaimed Aggregates, "The customer can get more for
their dollar buying recycled pavement which performs, in specific applications,
equally well as virgin asphalt at about half the the cost.
RAI's commitment to "green" paving technologies includes investment in quality control,
mix design, and quality assurance for each ReNewtm project performed.
American Asphalt & Concrete completed all paving operations for this job in
one shift. Tony goes on the say that his customer appreciated the cost savings passed
on to him, and it made it easy to fund this project that provided a dust free, mud
free environment.
Ruben Ramirez, equipment manager for American Asphalt & Concrete, said he was
"Impressed with the quality of the Renew™ asphalt pavement, the ease and workability
of the material, as well as a product that does not emit any toxic fumes or smoke."
Greg Tyner, Vice President, goes on to say, "Renew™ asphalt pavement is a
great alternative to conventional hot mix asphalt that will provide my company many
opportunities to help our customers and to secure us more projects in the future."
